Berkeley decisions are out today!
By Ern Sheong | March 27, 2009
Yeah, that’s what I heard. So give me a holler here if you bumped into my blog (or read it from time to time) and got into Berkeley!
Tell me your intended major and where you are from!
Also, just holler if you got into other universities too!

Hi. I came across this googling for Berkeley blogs (am/was from Singapore), so I hope you wouldn’t mind a quick question – I heard stories about how it’s difficult to get good marks without studying 24/7 (due to the curve) which causes some cutthroat competition and that it’s hard to get into classes/switch majors due to the uni’s size? In your experience are these just nasty rumours or is it something that I should be aware of in deciding whether to enroll?
Thanks (:

I entered your blog once in a while. I appreciate lots of useful information from you regarding Berkeley!
I was accepted by UC Berkeley, MIT, CALTECH and UCLA for PhD program. I rejected Stanfurd’s indirect offer, where a professor emailed me and asked me to join their project. No news from Georgia Tech yet. That’s all I applied. Oh ya, I am from KL.
Guess what? I will choose UC Berkeley. In many research fields, other universities simply can’t compete with Berkeley. Go Bears!

@Anonymous:
well people here are quite smart too, especially if you are in engineering, and particularly if you are in EECS (not me though). Perhaps you would have an easier time in other majors, but definitely everyone would agree that you still have to do some work, but definitely not to the extent of 24/7. That also depends on how much load/units you want to take on. Take on too many and yes, 24/7 is true, but take a reasonable load and 24/7 is myth. some majors are capped, so switching is not that easy. if you are undeclared then you can apply to any major if you have the requirements. and particularly business majors (Haas) have some more intense competition going on there (50% admittance to Haas) Enrollment of classes is pretty fair, and is done in phases for better spread. You should be fine if you have some back-up options if the classes get full, though. Overall, no issue for me, since there are so many classes to choose from. Whatever you just mentioned is present to some degree at every university, so yeah
@Bear:
Awesome dude! Berkeley over MIT and Stanfurd! What field is that?

Since you are from EECS, a good example would be micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) field. Currently in Berkeley (EECS), you have Prof. Clark Nguyen, Prof. Albert Pisano, Prof. Kris Pister, Prof. Ming Wu, Prof. Boser, and the great Prof. Emeritus Richard Muller who are all top-notch pioneers in MEMS. And the best part is that most of the current world leading researchers in MEMS (at CALTECH, Stanford, UCLA, CMU, Cambridge, NTU, KAIST, etc) literally graduated from Berkeley.
Having said that, I am going to the ME dept.

@Bear: haha that’s nice to know :) all the best!!! maybe we can meet up or something when you are here, though i rarely get in contact with any graduate students haha

Thanks. Haha, sure. I look forward to coming to Berkeley and get to know new friends like you. But then I am rather worried also whether I can survive their tough academic requirement.
By the way, it seems like there aren’t many Malaysians studying at Berkeley, right? Especially for graduate study. I guess not many malaysians are willing to face the awkward situation of being questioned by their own relatives, “Is Berkeley a low-level school? Is the degree recognized in Malaysia?” Haha. I can handle that.
