JPA offered a Scholarship for my studies in UC Berkeley!!!

***PRAISE THE LORD! He answered my prayers.***

I was driving in the afternoon around 5.30 today when Cher Hao called me and told me that the JPA Scholarship (Malaysian Public Service Department) application results were out.

So I told him my I.C. No. and after a few moments…

“Eh, you got it wei.”

“…wow… serious…”

I actually forgot that I applied for it, mainly because I thought that the chances were pretty slim (especially since I am of the “wrong” skin color in Malaysia) But well, clearly there was some meritocracy in this, and they accepted most if not all of those who gained admission into the Ivy League and Ivy League standard universities (where Berkeley, which is not an Ivy League, stands).

I am going for it.

So instead of 2.5 years to complete my degree, I will do it in 3 years instead. The remaining 4th year of scholarship I intend to use to study Masters.

I thank God for this scholarship. My parents are extremely happy.

Bond? I don’t intend to get bonded. I will pay back if necessary OR they will release me from the bond because “there are no jobs available for you.”

    Ern Sheong,

I am writing this with a big smile on my face right now. If someone is worthy of that JPA scholarship to Berkeley, it’s you mate. You deserve it and you won it fair and square.

Guess it’s really true that when you set your eyes on a dream, no matter how high or difficult to achieve it may seem, somehow things work out to help you along and reach it.

    God’s wonderful, ain’t he?

Keep taking care man, and live your university life over in the States to the very best.

I’ll be doing what I can back down here in Singapore, chasing my dreams too.

    God bless.

    Wow.

When I read your post, I was lost for words. This is just a “wow”.

Well, I’d write more, but Kevin has said what I wanted to say, so I think I will simply agree with him.

Indeed, God is wonderful and awesome. And He is a cliffhanger. How long did you wait for this scholarship? Long enough for you to forget about it. Thank God He doesn’t forget about it! He has opened doors for you to go to USA, and He has provided. That’s enough confirmation. =P

Heartiest, most joyful congratulations to you, and all thanksgiving and praise to the Lord our God! =)

P.S. Kevin, where in Singapore are you going for uni?

  4. Ern Sheong on August 1st, 2008

Praise the Lord! He has truly been merciful to you and me in giving us these opportunities! Guess you’ve really been praying hard about financing your education too, so this outcome must really be pleasant!

You were asking for it too…. hammering out a 56 page tome for the calculus of variations…. whacking a physics paper for fun… taking E-STAR instead of H3-STAR because you wanted to learn more. Admit it - you do like learning a lot, don’t you? In a normal context, I’d say that if anyone deserved the title scholar, it’d be you - Still it is the Lord who provides the talent and the grit to power through the past 2.5 years from DJ to NJ to UCB!

  15. Ern Sheong on August 4th, 2008

@Zhong Liang: wow thanks la man. i totally forgot that I did something like that (56 page? o.O you remembered the no. of pages hehe)… though it sounds like i am some freak also haha… and yeah thanks for cheering on and supporting yourself!

Congratulation bro. It’s amazing how God answers prayer. It might be late to us but for God his timing is always right. Never too late, never too early. Study hard in Berkeley…

  17. Ern Sheong on August 6th, 2008

@ruehyinn: hey thanks! the timing is really tight i must say… :)
