Maybank Scholarship, a joke?
This is a joke post on Maybank, the company where my dad worked. Was lurking around Maybank2u.com and saw this Scholarship Programme:
Quoted from here on 29 June 2008:
MAYBANK SCHOLARSHIP
Who Can Apply:
• Malaysian citizen
• Not more than 23 years of age
• Pursuing a full time degree course in any discipline at Malaysian and JPA approved international universities (IPTA & IPTS)

Value of Award:
• RM7,000 per annum
• Laptop for educational use
• Paid training attachment at Maybank
Servive Bond:
To serve the Maybank Group a minimum of 4 years upon graduation.
—
“Servive Bond”? What is servive? Ahahaha… Spell properly la Maybank. You are a national brand.
And you are only giving RM 7000 per annum and expect the scholarship recipients to be BONDED TO MAYBANK FOR 4 YEARS? Daylight robbery! Help! To begin with, most costs of an overseas education is a 6 digit number.
To put things in perspective, Singapore has scholarships with 4-year bonds but they pay the full fees and costs of studying at an international university. (which amounts to about RM 500000?!!!) So… RM 7000 a year?????!!!!
*I apologise to those who like such scholarships for the prospect of job security. Nothing against those applying.*
But we all got to agree that this is absurd. They are asking for brains with such stinginess or RM 7K per annum. Now I see why I cannot blame my fellow Malaysian friends for leaving this stingy country.
How I wish my dad worked for CIMB which had a Full Scholarship Scheme for its employees.

dun understand y u r so bloddy sarcastic. so ure rich n dats good cos u can pay for ur education. but some pple out there rilly need d cash. if u dun need it, no need to poke fun of it. try being more sensitive instead of posting insensitive n controversial posts all d time n den wondering y pple react so strongly to it. den come up with ur trademark phrase “it’s over, no more comments pls, let it pass”
Ern sheong did you not apply for the AMCHAM-MACEE scholarship?
And boy that’s some rough talk anon. Ern sheong never mention he’s so filthy rich that he’s rollin around in cash like on hay everyday. I think ur personally attacking him instead of addressing the issue at hand without bias.
I’m sure ern is perfectly capable of defending himself. I just think there’s such no need to anyway.
Haha… I heard there’s a 12-year civil servant bond in Thailand. Considering how civil servants in Thailand are overworked and poorly paid (to the extent that most resort to accepting bribes) no matter how good the sponsoring is, the bond is still absurd. ==” No buying yourself out either. They implemented this new clause some time ago, because scholars tend to simply buy themselves out.
I agree that RM 7000 is not a lot, and I don’t know if it’s enough to subsidize entire tuition fee. If it cannot make overseas education free, that’s fine. If it cannot even make M’sian education free, I don’t think it’s worth it for a scholarship *unless* you want to work at Maybank anyway (or want job security). The money is not worth the bond. Singapore scholarships are generally more generous. Pun unintended. I must point out though, Ern Sheong, that I don’t think the Maybank scholarship is meant for someone who studies overseas like you; more for people who are studying in Malaysia and wants job security a bit of money. Different people, different needs. Thank God there’s something for everyone.
Yes indeed anon. Rough talk. Ern Sheong never said he is filthy rich and he is simply expressing his views. If you feel offended, please don’t read.
@Ome: yup i guess this scholarship is more for people in the local universities. but it also says “JPA approved international universities” so that’s what sparked my reaction.
Well to be frank I think I have to start counting my blessings and stop complaining about the many things that do not meet my ideals. We live in an imperfect world anyway, and yeah to only way to be happy is to make the best out of what I already have. And yeah sometimes I forget how fortunate I am already. Seems very selfish of me too… My bad la.
@Stella: yup, I did try for the AMCHAM-MACEE. thanks for the backing but yeah you needn’t
@Anon: Thanks for the rebuke. If you want “feel-good”/”what-I-did-today” posts you can point your browser elsewhere. I apologize if the post seemed insensitive to you. This is my personal opinion. If Maybank wants to be a global bank with a highly-skilled workforce that can bring it to the international playing field, it has to invest more in people and brain power. It should be giving more incentives to the people in terms of a larger grant or scholarship amount.
I am brought to the attention that RM 7 K is indeed a large amount to many people, especially in the rural areas. So to the people who see it this way, I apologize. All I can say is that you deserve better from a company who is the largest bank in Malaysia. My dad worked there for years. All I can say that it isn’t really that generous a bank compared to, say, Public Bank.
I am giving people the impression on this blog that I am a rich kid. If I really were a rich kid I wouldn’t have had to blog and groan and moan about scholarships in this country, or cut down my university life which is supposed to be “the-best-time-of-your-life” from 4 to 2.5 years which I am doing simply due to the outrageous costs. So if you guys win right now and I decide to not study in Berkeley because of the “better-to-donate-your-education-money-away-to-good-causes-argument”, I would end up having no where to go anymore since I have turned down Cornell and NUS and NTU. The other option is to start working right away, or enroll locally, which I really do not really fancy for my own personal reasons. so can’t you guys let me go get an education other than lambaste me and try to drag me down the drain? why target me? Looks like I have been standing around looking pretty as a target for carte blanche remarks. Look at my DJians and NJCian list and I can tell you that perhaps 30% or more are studying in an overseas uni. And also, let all the medical students who are currently pursuing medicine to donate away their education money to charity. Then our country would have no more doctors. So that is smarter and the right thing to do is it?
Anyway, since you see my posts as “Insensitive and controversial,” I think you have a problem with Christianity, otherwise my posts should not seem this way. (since the “controversial” ones are about that) But it’s okay. Do what you like and think what you like. I give up. Seriously. I shall not be dictated by what people think of me or how they view me. Trash me all you like. I don’t really care.
