Can’t help it
WOW. I can’t stand myself. A blog break of 9 hours. =.=
Obama won the nomination yay! I guess it’s easy to see a winner when you see one. Have been supporting him since the days when everyone was saying Obama didn’t stand a chance.
Just wanna ask you guys:
YOU CAN VOTE FOR TWO OPTIONS!
What name should Ern Sheong use in the Unites States? (select two answers)
- Ern Sheong (they’re gonna have lotsa problems with this) (43%, 15 Votes)
- Ernie (don’t even think about it) (40%, 14 Votes)
- Jonathan (37%, 13 Votes)
- Ern (11%, 4 Votes)
- Lin (6%, 2 Votes)
- Sheong (3%, 1 Votes)
Total Voters: 35
Weird: Hi, I’m Lin.
Weirder: Hi, I’m Ern.
Weirder still: Hi, I’m Sheong.
No warmth la. Ern Sheong sounds so much warmer.
Jonathan? hmmm I tried to not use this name in school ever since primary school. That’s why most call me Ern Sheong. Jonathan sounds… common. But I’m ok with it la.
Will the Americans be able to say “Ern Sheong”?
- No they would rather assign me another random name (70%, 19 Votes)
- Yes they would like “Ern Sheong” (30%, 8 Votes)
Total Voters: 27
I can imagine that if I used “Ern Sheong” I would get the reply: “Let’s call you Thomas instead.”
Yup yup. I would like to hear from anyone who has a Chinese name and managed to use it in the States with minor problems.
Edit: I just found out from a friend in Berkeley. People there don’t have the concept of two names. In the case of “Ern Sheong”, Ern becomes my name and Sheong becomes my middle name. Then it would be Ern S. Lin
Edit2: I think JONATHAN or JON would be it. That way, when people call me ERN SHEONG when I return from the US, I know definitely that I am home… and I can imagine that people won’t bother trying to pronounce Ern Sheong. And Ernie is too… friendly. Jon would be nice. Jon Lin

I tell you, they will call you Ernie for short. hahah
hahaha… and if u were there they wud call u aLe. Better than Ernie anytime
might just use jonathan la…
definitely they would call you as “jon/john”
I voted for ernie and lin. ERNIE!!!!!! lol
i think must use jonathan already la… jonathan also not so bad…
i think schezn hit the note here in the shoutbox
“hey ern sheong! my mom’s name’s siew min. the americans couldnt pronounce that for nuts, so they just called her SUE. :O in fact my brother got his eng name while we’re in the states cos they couldnt pronounce his chi name. (& usually, they don’t bother to try!)”
SO NOW it’s Jonathan/Jon versus Ern
>.< if they can pronounce zhang zi yi and chow yun fatt and gong li.. why not lin ern sheong? ask them to stop acting dumb? =X
nice one there… but i’m not a superstar…
Not forgetting jackie chan and jet li.. I don’t think Ern Sheong is too much for them. Just in my opinion la… if you’re going to somewhere new it’s best to use your real name rather than a nickname. Cause sometimes it can be rather confusing if your friends might want to help you out with some application? (or anything else for that matter…)
but jackie chan and jet li are so easy names. my version of those names would be jonathan lin or jon lin. see how. i will know it when i see their reaction to Ern Sheong haha
Since you have your Christian name, might as well make use of it.
Well did you know that Obama insisted his mates from his college days to call him Barack instead of Barry (which is simplified from his African name) because it means they embrace his heritage and accepting him for who he is.
I think you’ll do ok with Ern Sheong, however you pronounce that
@stella: hey hey thanks for commenting! I’m so confused now haha. wow how come you know obama history, read his book?
i read about it from Newsweek
Frankly speaking i accidentally stumbled to your blog and i like really like reading. Thoughtful but not boring, funny but not superficial.
I like
@stella: cool cool =) thanks btw. just speaking my mind most of the time… sometimes restraint needed haha
thanks for the compliment!
Hey Ern Sheong, why don’t you copy the Singaporeans and change your name to Ernsheong. there … 1 word… 1 shot … 1 (problem) kill(ed).
Er… all my forms are already using Ern Sheong. malas-lah. but that wun help them pronounce my name any better
